The Independence Day of Bangladesh

March 26

The Independence Day of Bangladesh, known as “স্বাধীনতা দিবস” (Shadhinôta Dibôsh) in Bengali, is observed on March 26th as a national holiday in Bangladesh. It honors the country’s declaration of independence from Pakistan, declared in the early hours of March 26, 1971.

Independence Day is typically marked by a range of events including parades, political speeches, fairs, concerts, ceremonies, and various public and private gatherings that celebrate Bangladesh’s history and culture. Television and radio stations air special programs and patriotic songs in tribute to the occasion. Some observances may include a thirty-one gun salute in the morning, while streets are often adorned with national flags. Various political parties and socio-economic organizations undertake initiatives to commemorate the day, often including visits to the National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar near Dhaka.

In 2017, Google honored the day with a special doodle on its Bangladesh domain. Additionally, celebrations were organized in Tripura, India, under the supervision of the Bangladeshi deputy high commissioner stationed there.

The year 2021 marked the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan, a significant milestone in the nation’s history.
